What jobs are most secure? Be a teacher?

Posted by TopOfTheThread on November 8, 2007

The business world is tougher than ever. Downsizing, mergers, and acquisitions occur everyday along with associated job losses.

The days of the “working at the same job for 20 years” is over… or is it?

There are jobs that are relatively secure, although that are typically not the top paying careers. Examples include * teachers * law enforcement * firemen.

Let’s take a look at the teaching profession. Teachers are not typically the highest paid individuals in a neighborhood, but there are benefits and opportunities.

  1. Teacher have “reasonable” work hours. It is common for a teacher to be home by 5:00 PM on a weeknight. How many other professions allow the person to be home at that hour?
  2. Teachers have many vacations including long summer vacations. This enables the teacher to be with his / her family and have a work-balanced life.
  3. Teachers get tenure! Depending upon the situation, unless a teacher “totally messes up”, once they have tenure, that job is theirs forever! Pretty nice security… Not many other professions offer this security.

What now typically arises is the argument “teachers don’t make enough money”. And, depending upon the part of the country, this is partially true.

Getting accepted into a good college is getting more and more competitive. SATs, ACTs, and other standardized tests are gaining increased importance in the acceptance process. As a result of this, depending, parents are paying for tutors to assist their children studying for these exams.

Who does the tutoring? Local teachers. How much do they charge? $50, $75, $100 per hour and more! I did a quick, informal, unscientific survey of 10 high school juniors. I asked them if they had a tutor for the SATs. EVERY student, all 10 of them, had at least one tutor for the SATs! Many had 2 tutors; one for math and one for verbal. (Note: These were students in NY.)

Teachers have the opportunity of making as much after school, as they do in school.

Think about it. A secure job in which you can make significant money after hours… Consider it!
