Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills, South Dakota

Posted by TopOfTheThread on May 4, 2008

The Crazy Horse Memorial was started June 3rd, 1948 to honor the Northe American Indians.
Crazy Horse was the only chief who did not surrender nor sign a peace treaty with the United States.

This sculpture is to be world’s largest mountain sculpture. To put it in perspective, when completed, Mount Rushmore would fit in one eye ball of the Craze Horse Monument.

There is no government funding involved in the project. This allows them to do as they wish, on their own schedule. As you can imagine, this also creates a tight budget.

No one really knows when this project will be completed. It may take an additional 50 years or more…

For additional information, please visit the Crazy Horse Memorial site.

Take a look at Crazy Horse’s wampum belt at crazyhorsebelt.com. Read about his legacy, see photos of the belt, learn how my ancestor knew him and how I ended up with the belt. It would be great to expand discussion on this topic to other people, blogs, and tribes (especially the Iroquois, who read wampum belts). Feel free to respond with a comment on this blog. H. Laidlaw
