Protectionism Today – Germany – United States

Posted by TopOfTheThread on October 6, 2010

Per Wikipedia:

Protectionism is the economic policy of restraining trade between states, through methods Protectionism Germany US Tariffs Custom Taxessuch as tariffs on imported goods, restrictive quotas, and a variety of other government regulations designed to discourage imports, and prevent foreign take-over of domestic markets and companies.

This policy is closely aligned with anti-globalization, and contrasts with free trade, where government barriers to trade and movement of capital are kept to a minimum…

So we’re heading to a business conference in Berlin Germany.  We need to ship our giveaways  for the conference.  I get notification from UPS via my hotel, the shipment is being delayed in customs. A Customs Tax of 19% must be paid before they will release our boxes.

19%

That’s a great example of Protectionism! Of course we pay the tax. We have no choice. We need the giveaways  for the conference.  We had already paid for and had our logo put on these  Memory products (our giveaways.)

I ventured to try to figure out the import tax to bring a similar product into the USA.

(I would not be surprised if I am wrong figuring this import tax.) I visited the USITC – Tariff Information Center at http://www.usitc.gov/tariff_affairs/. I ended up looking at section 8542.32.00.  I believe, if this is the correct product classification, there is no tariff for bringing memory into the USA.  No tax.

19% versus 0%

Does that make sense?  Is that good for us?  The USA is one of the world’s largest markets and we allow other countries (Germany in this case) to charge an exorbitant fee for imports into their country? And we are not charging any tax on the same product coming into the USA from their country?

I am not an economist but this cannot be good for our economy.

(Note: I know I am correct with the 19% customs fee into Germany because I just paid it.  If someone can help verify or correct my import into the USA tax information, it will be greatly appreciated. )
